Observation Narrative
Part of a sizable stand of mature to locally old growth hardwoods occupying the steep, rocky portions of this north facing slope. While some selective cutting took place here in the distant past, the boulder filled ravines appear to have escaped and still contain trees exceeding 80 cm dbh. Red spruce is scattered throughout this stand, down to about 4200 ft. elevation. Measured trees (dbh in cm.): Betula allegheniensis (66), Fagus grandifolia (61), Picea rubens (54.2).
Plot located on north slope of Pine Mountain, just above Appalachian Trail in slight rocky depression.
